Working with Images & Cards in a Therapeutic Setting

A Two-Day Experiential CPD Workshop for Therapists, Counsellors & Practitioners

Images and cards can offer a powerful, flexible and accessible way of supporting therapeutic exploration. They can provide clients with a different language when words feel difficult, create opportunities for reflection and meaning-making, and open conversations that may not emerge through traditional verbal approaches alone.

This two-day CPD workshop is designed for professionals who want to deepen their understanding of working therapeutically with images and cards, explore different ways of incorporating them into practice, and develop confidence in using creative interventions intentionally and ethically.

The workshop is not about finding the “right” card or interpreting what an image means for a client. Instead, it explores how images and cards can become therapeutic invitations, allowing the client to bring their own meaning, associations, memories and perspectives to the work.

Day One | Explore, Share & Develop

The first day provides space to learn, explore and share.

We will look at the therapeutic principles behind using images and cards and consider the many ways these resources can be integrated into different therapeutic approaches.

Through discussion, experiential exercises and shared learning, we will explore:

  • Why images and cards can be therapeutically useful
  • Different types of therapeutic cards and image-based resources
  • Using images to support reflection, expression and meaning-making
  • Open-ended versus more structured approaches
  • Ways of introducing cards safely into therapeutic work
  • Developing therapeutic questions and invitations
  • Working with metaphor, symbolism and personal associations
  • Supporting clients who find verbal expression difficult
  • Using images to explore emotions, relationships, identity and life experiences
  • Working with cards in 1:1 and group settings
  • Adapting approaches for different client presentations
  • Client choice, autonomy and avoiding therapist interpretation
  • Ethical, professional and culturally sensitive considerations
  • Trauma-informed considerations when using evocative imagery
  • Reflecting on your own relationship with creative interventions

There will be opportunities to share experiences, ideas and existing practices, allowing the group to learn from one another as well as from the facilitator.

The emphasis is on developing your understanding and expanding your therapeutic thinking rather than being given a fixed set of techniques to reproduce.

Day Two | Experiment, Play & Practise

The second day moves from understanding into experimentation.

This is an opportunity to get the cards and images into your hands and explore what becomes possible when you begin to work creatively with them.

Through practical and experiential activities, you will have the opportunity to:

  • Experiment with different ways of using images and cards
  • Try out therapeutic prompts and questions
  • Explore individual and multiple-card approaches
  • Work with sequencing and storytelling
  • Explore themes, patterns and connections between images
  • Experiment with metaphor and symbolic exploration
  • Develop your own creative therapeutic activities
  • Practise introducing and closing an image or card intervention
  • Experience the process from the perspective of the client
  • Reflect on what feels useful, challenging or unexpected
  • Consider how different interventions might translate into your own practice
  • Share ideas and receive constructive feedback
  • Develop confidence in adapting interventions rather than following a prescribed formula

The day is deliberately experiential rather than purely instructional.

You will have space to explore, experiment, be curious and discover what works for you as a practitioner.

Bringing the Two Days Together

Across the two days, we move through a natural progression:

Day One
Understand → Explore → Share → Develop

Day Two
Experiment → Experience → Reflect → Integrate

The intention is that you leave not simply with a collection of card activities, but with a deeper understanding of how to think therapeutically about images and cards.

You will develop greater confidence in deciding:

Why am I using this intervention?
What might it offer this client?
How can I introduce it safely?
What meaning is the client bringing to it?
How can I remain curious rather than interpretive?
How can I adapt it to the person in front of me?

What You Can Expect to Take Away

By the end of the CPD, you will have:

  • Expanded your therapeutic toolkit
  • Developed a deeper understanding of image and card-based interventions
  • Experienced a range of practical approaches
  • Explored how to create your own activities
  • Considered ethical and trauma-informed practice
  • Developed ideas that can be adapted for 1:1 and group work
  • Reflected on your own therapeutic style
  • Built confidence in using creative interventions intentionally
  • Created a collection of ideas and approaches to take back into your practice

This is CPD for practitioners who want to go beyond simply collecting techniques.

It is an opportunity to slow down, explore, experiment and think creatively about the therapeutic relationship.
